The Japanese word for photograph — shashin (写真) — means not "drawing with light," as the Greek root of the English word suggests, but a copy of reality. I've always understood photography this way. The image already exists — found in the World, or envisioned and then constructed. The photographer just captures it.

Since I was a young boy, I've had a deep affinity for the culture and aesthetic sensibilities of Japan.

In the principles of ma (間), yūgen (幽玄), kanso (簡素), iki (粋), I recognized an alignment with the work I was already developing — a recognition that consciously orients my work today: the deliberate weight of negative space, the atmosphere of darkness and shadow, an absence of all things unnecessary to the image, subtle allure held in effortless composure.
